Since 2021, Dr. Jason Millar, Canada Research Chair in the Ethical Engineering of Robotics and AI, joined forces with Chantal Rodier, Artist-in-Residence and STEAM project coordinator at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa, to explore the power of art in critical AI research and in technological development environments.
Their common interests in multidisciplinary teams and their potential for transdisciplinary knowledge creation led them to initiate a pilot project that resulted in two art installations: Calibrating Stretched Transparency, a multidisciplinary conversation on AI and climate change, and I’m Honoured To Serve, an artistic critic of digital assistants and user’s exploitation. These installations have attracted the attention of The Globe and Mail, and Ingenium, a consortium of the three national museums - science and technology, agriculture, and aviation.
Dr. Jason Millar and artist Chantal Rodier will discuss the resulting art installations, their discoveries and where they are heading next.

Chantal Rodier is the Artist-in -Residence and STEAM Project Coordinator and at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Ottawa in Canada. She brings students from Arts and STEM together in project-based learning environments. She teaches STEAM design, visual literacy, creativity, and innovation. With formal training in mathematics, computer science, visual arts and arts management, she is interested in the incorporation art, and artistic practices as tools for critical exploration in multidisciplinary teams. She brings STEAM approaches to her roles as research fellow and adjunct curator with Ingenium, a consortium of Canada’s national science museums; as member-researcher of The Canadian Robotics and AI Ethical Design Lab (CRAiEDL.ca); and as founding member of the Human Centred Innovation Lab at the University of Ottawa.
Dr. Jason Millar holds the Canada Research Chair in the Ethical Engineering of Robotics and AI and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa’s School of Engineering Design and Teaching Innovation, with a cross-appointment in the Department of Philosophy. He is Faculty member of the Centre for Law, Technology and Society. He is also the Distinguished Research Director at Partnership on AI. His research interests include developing transdisciplinary frameworks, tools and methodologies that empower engineers, policymakers, and ethicists/philosophers (and others) to integrate ethical thinking into their daily workflow, and has focused on applications in automated vehicles, natural language processing, healthcare robotics, social and military robotics. He has authored book chapters, policy reports, and articles on the ethics, design, and governance of robotics and AI.
